The Farm
We currently have 12 acres of filberts (hazelnuts) and 10 acres of rolling hills dotted with century old oaks and maples. The homestead is surrounded by Noble, Grand, Fraser, and Douglas firs. Due to the popularity of Grands and Nobles, our Douglas Fir’s have grown to epic sizes, and you’re welcome to take the top!
History
The Steinbachs, some of Oregon’s earliest pioneers, established the farm in the 1870’s. Their first log cabin built in 1876 was donated to the Aurora Colony Historical Society by Ernest Becke. The current house, built in 1883 has had many renovations, and Ernest’s name can still be found in the foundation. There have only been 4 owners to the property in the last 140 years.
Daisugi
A unique Japanese style of tree trimming dating back to the Muromachi period (1333-1573), daisgui came about from a lumber shortage. A technique was created to grow several very tall, straight poles call Tachi-ki from a single tree. This lumber was used to build a Sukiya, a popular type of tea house.
